THUMB AWARD Burnett’s Legal Loophole

|

Thumbs down to State Judge Joe B. Burnett for using the legal system to escape an $89,000 personal debt to a Dallas businessman. Legal papers filed by Burnett’s attorney contend that John Abdnor has no legal recourse to collect the debt because Abdnor failed to file his lawsuit before the four-year statute of limitations on debts had passed. Abdnor’s lawsuit, filed in 1982, says he made a series of loans to Burnett between 1974 and 1980. Burnett has publicly admitted that he borrowed the money and has not repaid it. Can judges get off on technicalities too?
