Representing eight parent companies, 10 major department store chains operate in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex. Retailing across the board increased markedly in 1983, with the area retailers outstripping national increases.,

Sales volume on a local basis is not made available by the stores, although’ a rough rule of thumb requires that between $100 and $150 of goods be sold per square foot for an operation to be considered successful. Thus, a 200,000-square-foot store might produce between $20 and $30 million in annual sales. The larger the individual store or the more specialized and; high-end the merchandise, the higher the sales volume per square foot of selling space.
