Keeping your home under lock and key has gone high tech, thanks to Schlage Lock Company, which has made keyless entry possible for not only the front door but for every room in the house. Here’s how it works: everyone is assigned an entry code, which can also be disabled at any time. With the proliferation of wine cellars, many parents are installing keypads on cellar doors as well as safe and gun rooms. The units retail for $129 to $149 at The Home Depot and Lowe’s and are available in a variety of styles and eight finishes. Even if you’re not a techno whiz, Schlage promises a 30-minute installation that even high-level dyslexics can perform. “When you hand out keys to your house, you never know who’s made a copy,” says Mel Gerst, product manager for Schlage. Thanks to this, no more worrying about the housesitter making keys for all of her friends. Wall Homes has made Schlage keypads a standard feature in all new models as an added buyer perk. The only pitfall we foresee: keeping track of yet another pass code.
