Black Is Back and Designers Get a Standing Ovation

HOW DARK: Baccarat’s black-crystal chandelier: now all the goth kids will want one.

After its Paris debut, Baccarat’s black-crystal (isn’t that an oxymoron?) chandelier was the guest of honor at local showroom Haroo & Haroo. The 110-pound, $80,000 fixture was the centerpiece of owner Mikyung Chung’s early June Black Party. Attendees included Debra Stewart, who’s finally completed the exterior renovation of the Fredericksburg Inn & Suites; Cheryl Van Duyne, ASID; Joanie Wyll, ASID; John Phifer Marrs, ASID, and new associate Mark Fletcher; Price Dixon, allied member ASID; Bill Lawrence of William & Wesley; Rose Mary T. Gatlin; Glen Boudreaux, ASID, IFDA; David Quadrini; and Tonya Loweryburke of Wilson & Associates. Potential buyers, take note: Baccarat will only produce 10 or 11 U.S. limitations, a much nicer word than knockoff.

New construction alert: architect Larry Boerder, AIA, has been hired by Jean Boulle to build on the site of what was the 40,000-plus-square-foot Chateau du Triomphe on Strait Lane.

Also making a fresh start is Julio Quinones. At the ripe old age of 26, he has left Richard Trimble & Associates, taking client Laura Miller with him. Not that he’s ever lacked for those. There’s Cheryl McMurphy, who will likely hire him again when she buys into the W. And Dr. Perry Pate is said to be house hunting in Highland Park, though he has a Quinones crash pad on Travis. He’s also worked with Don Lett, a partner in Seconds & Surplus, where Quinones feels right at home. Designer secret: The Salvation Army is one of his favorite haunts: I’m not a fan of using all new stuff.

Meanwhile, Laura Lee Clark is redoing the Mullen house on Meadowbrook for new owners Chris and John Wagoner. And I hear designer Elaine Reinhardt is a tad over budget on her Rockbrook project (what designer isn’t?).

DESIGN TIME: Mary Carry, Kim Turner, and Beau Black at Haroo & Haroo’s Black Party.

I don’t think budget will be a problem for Wilson & Associates while they’re filling the high-roller suites in Las Vegas Venetian casino. They’re ordering many items from Dallas vendors: antiques from Allan Knight, chairs and stools from Haroo & Haroo, sofas and sectionals from Smink, custom dining and cocktail tables from J. Manheim Antiques, and intricately carved glass panels by artist Polly Gessell.

Congrats to Robb & Stucky, winners of Furniture Today’s Retail Road Trip Challenge. They took first prize for ambience, warmth, and ease of shopping.

You heard it here first: back in May, designer Thomas O’Brien was the big draw at the Covins Furniture benefit for Dog and Kitty City. During a quick Q&A, O’Brien confessed that he’s working on a Dallas home, but wouldn’t divulge the name. Lucky for us the secret client let the cat out of the bag. Thanks, Mary Louise Sinclair.
