Careful readers will remember the name C.W. Smith. Last year, Sean Mitchell profiled the Dallas novelist for D Magazine on the occasion of the publication of Smith’s novel Girl Flees Circus. If you’re not a careful reader, you should go back and read Mitchell’s profile. Because then you’ll want to attend an event this Thursday, August 25, at SMU.
To celebrate Smith’s just-published 14th book, which marks 50 years of publishing fiction, the DeGolyer Library will serve snacks and beverages at 6:30 p.m. Then, starting at 7:30, Smith will tear a telephone book in half and swallow a flaming sword—if I had organized the event. But I didn’t. So I think Smith will talk about his prolific writing career and read from The Museum of Marriage, his new collection of short stories, several of which are set in Dallas. The title story, in fact, is set on a street where I once lived, Vanderbilt. I very much enjoyed it—the short story, not the residency, because I got evicted—and I look forward to reading the rest of Smith’s book.
