Delia Jasso Withdraws Support for Marriage Equality Resolution

|

Just hours after the DMN put up a story (paywall) saying Mayor Mike Rawlings will support the non-binding resolution for marriage equality, lame-duck councilwoman Delia Jasso–who had signed a memo in support of the resolution–changed her mind and withdrew her support. Jasso was endorsed by the Stonewall Democrats of Dallas before losing a May 11 election to Scott Griggs, who drafted the resolution. Jasso hasn’t been returning media calls, and her openly gay assistant isn’t commenting yet, but Griggs told the Dallas Voice that he thinks he still has enough votes, and he plans to press forward.

Angela Hunt, who will also be leaving the city council soon, told the Voice Jasso’s decision is “incredibly disappointing,” and “indicative of a political opportunist.” Then Hunt went at Jasso really hard: “I wish I could say this was out of character for Delia, but unfortunately I’ve seen this type of flip-flopping continuously throughout her time on the council, depending on which way the political winds are blowing,” Hunt said.

Omar Narvaez is on an LGBT task force created by Jasso and he is president of Stonewall Democrats of Dallas. He posted on the group’s Facebook page:

“I had a long long long phone call with her tonight, and her reasons are her reasons, and she will have to deal with them. As one of her most staunch supporters, I withdrew any and all support for her. This is not the end all of everything, but merely a bump in the road. Sadly, Dallas will be behind on history…I have never been so disappointed or felt so betrayed by an elected official and ally as I am now.”
