KRLD Restaurant Week 2012: Reader Reviews

Today is day–hell, I’ve lost count–of  KRLD Restaurant Week. Are you participating? If so, please share your experiences. Tip your servers and if they are exceptional, snap their picture, take down their name, and allow us to adore them.

    Our group went to Bijoux last night and were thrilled with the amazing service and fantastic food. I know that a number of servers dread RW as some people are bad tippers, but Nick Kotecki made us feel welcome, provided outstanding service and even let us know that the wine paring was not the way to go as they were pouring one ounce and less pours. We were able to order our wine by the glass for each course as suggested on the menu and pay only a small amount more. The sommelier, Clint Day, was friendly and made suggestions as well as delivering the wines himself. We were very happy with our visit to Bijoux and will be back again!

    Four of us went to the Mansion last night and had a fabulous meal. The watermelon and goat cheese appetizer was a fantastic combination of flavors. The roasted chicken was also wonderful, full of flavor. Servings were the perfect size. Just enough food without a gross overload. The service was very good as usual. I would highly recommend the Mansion for restaurant week.

    Went to Pappas Bros. last night. Everything was expertly prepared and served (thank you, Richard). I opted for the Lobster Bisque, which I remembered from last year. Nice hint of sherry, and is a match made in heaven when paired with their bread. House salad was fine. My dining partner got the caesar, and also gave it a thumbs up.

    She chose the filet, which we split. Excellent flavor and cooked to order. I got the Maine Lobster, which was fine, but about half the size of the one I got last year. I blame this on myself. Last year, I went during the week and was treated to a beast of a lobster, probably around 2 lbs. If you go on a Friday, do not expect to be so lucky.

    Desserts were the cheesecake, half of which came home with me, and the chocolate peanut cake, which disappeared within minutes. Never did get a bite!

    My husband and I visited Truluck’s Southlake last night and had impeccible service from Ashley Schmidt! Our visit started with a welcome from the managing partner, Mike McClure, who thanked us for supporting Restaurant Week. When Ashley came to the table she too thanked us for supporting Restaurant Week and the important charities, Lena Pope and North Texas Foodbank, it supports. Ashley gave us a rundown of the menu and pointed out the Beef “Rockefeller” that was created specially for Restaurant Week. Our meal was absolutely delicious, the portions enormous (can you say doggie bag) and the award winning chocolate cake was both award winningly delicious last night as well as for breakfast this morning! Thank you Ashley for making our visit so special!

    We went to the French Room last night (Saturday, 8/25) for Restaurant Week and it was lovely. When we arrived, they could not find our reservation (I had left a message on Friday to confirm but did not listen to a message I was left about not having a reservation – more on this below) but they graciously seated us nonetheless in spite of a full house. What a wonderful few hours of bliss, calm, elegance and civility. Walking into the French Room dining room is as breathtaking as the first time we went there years ago when we first moved to Dallas. The service is impeccable and we would like to nominate the charming and affable Carlos M and his entire service team. Courses were nicely timed and we had a lovely evening. We opted for the crab cake and tenderloin (surcharge items) and the hazelnut torte for dessert. Everyone in the dining room was nicely dressed and it was very refreshing that no one as far as we could see was using a smartphone. An occasional digital photo was taken but no phone food snapping or email checking or cell phone talking. We are not French Room frequent diners but were treated as if we were from the moment we arrived until we left. Carlos thanked us profusely as he handed me a beautiful rose and a copy of the RW menu on which he had written thank you, his name and date. Last weekend, we went to 2 other participating “trendier” restaurants on Saturday (early and it was storming) and Sunday (again early and 3/4 full) and I would rate both evening’s food and service as “meh”. Last night was a refreshing change to be made to feel like a welcomed and valued guest with no hard sell or bums rush. As it turned out, halfway through the meal, it occurred to me that I had made the reservation under my husband’s last name and we checked when we were leaving and that was the case. They do not confirm two-tops hence no call. Luckily we did nit end up being no-show’s”. Thank you to all the French Room and we will not wait so long again until our next visit. It’s as good for one after a stressful week at work and days of worrying about one’s mother who lives in coastal Florida with an impending hurricane coming as a day at a spa!

    On Saturday night, my fiance and I went to The Landmark Restaurant in the Warwick Melrose Hotel. The food was excellent, and Donna our server was wonderful. When they found out that were were just engaged that morning, they did their best to make it a special evening for us. They brought us champagne with dessert. Following dinner, we went down the hall to the Library Bar to listen to a great jazz singer. The restaurant staff notified the bar, and the singer dedicated a song to us. We will likely be back to the Landmark in the future to celebrate an anniversary!

    My husband and I celebrated our 2nd anniversary at the Capitol Grille in the Shoppes at Legacy. The entire staff was fantastic. we arrived to a booth set back in the corner that was decorated with rose petals and heart shaped confetti. As I said everyone was wonderful but our server Michael Clayton was top-notch bar none. He started us off with the Generous pour event wines (of which we tried 4). His recommendations were spot on and he made everything very easy and relaxed. He took care of a beautiful Happy Anniversary dessert that we shared. We even took a picture with Michael to share our celebration with friends and family because he was a huge part of making our evening so enjoyable. We had no idea at the time that we would have an opportunity like this to tell everyone how wonderful he is and may actually need that photo later…we just took it because he was meaningful to us. Thank you Michael Clayton and all the fantastic staff at the Capitol Grille for a wonderful and memorable evening, what you do matters.
