SideDish Does Maine Lobster Shacks: Route One and Bar Harbor

|

Again, thanks to all of you for your suggestions for lobster shacks along Highway One from Boston to Bar Harbor. We did our best to hit as many as we could in a little less than two days. We drove to six and ate at four. (Bad planning–two are closed on Mondays.)

Below you’ll find pictures. Here is how we ranked the lobster rolls we tried.

1. Harrasseeket  2. Morse’s  3. Sprague’s  4. Barnacle Billy’s.

We also sampled lobster rolls in Boston at Legal Seafood (too much tricked up mayo for me) and Summer Shack which was basically fresh lobster on bread. Delicious.

Jump for the joy of eating in Maine in the summer.

First stop.
Lobster roll at Harrasseeket.
Stopped at this joint on our way but it was closed.
We drove to Waterman's Beach Lobster in South Thomaston but it was closed. So sad.
Estes Lobster House in South Harpswell.

Stopped at Red's in Wiscasset. There was at least an hour wait. We didn't wait. Walked across the street to Sprague's.
Sprauge's is across the street from Red's in Wiscasset. Only waited 15 minutes for great roll. Can't imagine it is any better at Red's. Little mayo; better view of the Sheepscot from their patio.
We grabbed a six-pack Bar Harbor Blueberry Ale and decided to find a lobster take out place and do a picnic. Best beer I tried. Managed to get a few home. Need more.
We hit Trenton Bride Lobster Pound for take out lobster.
Trenton Bridge Lobster Pound in Trenton, Maine. (Just south of Bar Harbor.)

Picnic dinner. $52. Black flies and mosquitoes free.
Tiny frog in Acadia National Park.
On the way back we stopped at Barnacle Billy's in Ogunquit. Too much mayo for me but my buddy Evan loved it.
