Italian Wine Super Bargains below.

Bolgheri                                            reg                   Sale
Campo al Mare 04                 $29.99                   $9.99
“Consulting oenologist Attilio Pagli has turned out another gem in this 2004 Bolgheri Rosso. A highly attractive blend of 60% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Cabernet Franc aged in barrique, it presents expressive notes of ripe dark fruit, sweet toasted oak, earthiness and minerals along with a soft, open-textured personality. It offers much drinking pleasure at a very reasonable price.” The Wine Advocate

Tuscany
Collozzi 04                        $49.99                   $19.99
“Beautiful aromas of berries, currant and licorice follow through to a full-bodied palate, with velvety tannins and a long finish. Balanced and rich. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Best after 2008.” 92ws

Castello di Ama Chianti Classico 04               $49.99                   $19.99
“The 2004 Chianti Classico is a very serious Chianti. Livelier in color and more expressive in its aromatics than the 2003, it exhibits a nuanced personality, with notes of dark cherries, licorice and minerals that open up in the glass. It offers outstanding length on the palate and fine yet broad tannins that will require a few years to come together. A bottle of the 2001 tasted alongside it was just entering the early part of its drinking window. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2019.” 90rp

Piedmont
Eiunadi Dogliani Vigna Tecc 05                      $32.99                   $14.99
“Readers should also consider the estate’s Dolcettos, which are among the most unique wines being made in the region. The Vigna Tecc is particularly noteworthy, and is now labeled under the new Dogliani designation. The 2005 Dogliani Vigna Tecc is another intensely-colored wine. Made in a more full-throttle style than the Dolcetto, this vibrant wine is packed with the essence of blueberry jam, chocolate, licorice and tar. It is an impeccably balanced, long Dogliani.” 90rp

Conterno Fantino Barolo Ginestra 03             $104.99                 $34.99
“In multiple tastings over the last year the estate’s 2003 Barolo Sori Ginestra has consistently proven to be one of the vintage’s top Barolos. The wine’s hallmark qualities are all there; deep color, full-bodied, intense black cherries and plums, grilled herbs, spices and sweet toasted oak, even if they are not as well-articulated as in more typical vintages. Rich and expansive on the palate, this big, strapping Barolo needs another few years of bottle age to drink at its finest. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2018.” 94rp

Einaudi Barolo Costa Grimaldi 03                  $99.99                   $29.99
280 cases made “The estate’s 2003 Barolo Costa Grimaldi is made in a linear, focused style, with an additional layer of sweet spiciness from the oak that complements the poised, ripe dark fruit. It, too, reveals outstanding persistence on the palate and a long, fresh finish. It should offer highly pleasurable drinking in another year or two. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2018.” 92rp

Conterno Fantino Barolo Vigna Gris 03          $104.99                 $29.99
Vigna del Gris is made from the lower portion of the Ginestra vineyard. “Offers rich aromas of plum, berry and raw meat. Full-bodied, with soft, round tannins and a long, caressing finish. Very pretty and rich. All in harmony. Best after 2010. 695 cases made.” 92ws

Travaglini Gattinara Tre Vigne 98                 $49.99                   $9.99
“For most consumers the historic Travaglini estate is synonymous with Gattinara. The estate produces three Gattinaras from its extensive holdings – the entry-level Gattinara, the Tre Vigne, which is a selection from three of the family’s best plots and a Reserva. The Tre Vigne is a decidedly more modern wine. It shows more influence of small oak in its deeply aromatic nose of herbs and vanilla. On the palate the wine offers plenty of sweet macerated cherry fruit with good length and very pretty overall balance in an open, accessible style. Aged 32 months in oak.” The Wine Advocate
