Trans.lation Fall Celebration Highlighting Ethiopian New Year at Trans.lation Vickery MeadowSept. 10, 4-8 p.m. 8361 Park Ln. Dallas, TX 75231.

The socially engaged artwork that started out as a Nasher commission of artist Rick Lowe has new life of late thanks to new project manager Carol Zou. For more on Zou, check out Alaena Hostetter’s piece on diversity in Dallas arts.

Elliott Erwitt at PDNB GallerySept. 12, 5-8 p.m. 1202 Dragon St. Ste. 103, Dallas, TX 75207.

The great 20th century photographer, who receives a survey show at PDNB, was a master of balance and tone, but is most notable for his quick reflexes and knack for finding moments of absurdity, surprise, and unintended humor. His photos, taken at a time when images were less ubiquitous and disposable, are flush with the unbearable lightness of the fleeting moment.

Tightrope by Tom Orr at Barry Whistler Gallery Sept. 12, 6-8 p.m. 2909 Canton St. #B Dallas, TX 75226.

Tom Orr’s latest exhibition will consist of two installations, each filling the two rooms of the gallery. Prepare yourself for Orr’s always titillating explorations of form and abstraction by way of optical trickery.

The Story with no Ending at Circuit 12 Sept. 12, 6-10 p.m. 1811 E. Levee St. Dallas, TX 75207.

This exhibition brings Quebec-based artist Simon Bilodeau to town. Bilodeau is a painter who creates monochromatic installations that often deconstruct monumental forms or create micro environments. The work explores the object in consumeristic culture, fusing high-and-low cultural idioms and working through a variety of art historical traditions.

Erica Stephens: Southern Vanitas at The Safe Room at the Texas TheatreSept. 12, 7-10 p.m. 231 W. Jefferson Blvd. Dallas, TX 75208.

Erica Stephens is turning the tiny Safe Room gallery into a makeshift photo studio masquerading as the setting of a 16th century atelier. Visitors will participate in sitting for still life portraits of themselves, which will be documented on instant photo and hung in the space for the duration of the show. If you want to participate, bring an object or item of personal or sentimental value to accompany you in the shot. Five bucks will get you a copy of your photo.
