The Foundry will host Psycho Pony this evening, a Neil Young cover band fronted by area musician and radio personality, Jeff Whittington. As I’ve mentioned before, Psycho Pony has a very believable take on Young’s music and his backing band whose name they’ve bastardized. I saw Whittington at a function earlier this week, and we agreed that all cover bands should theoretically be drama-free. But are they?
Def Rain and Dark Rooms will be playing at Crown and Harp this evening, in honor of Dallas music socialite Monique Roberts’ 30th birthday. A Dallas expat contacted me this week, lamenting our celebrity culture and double-checking to make sure the event was real: “Do they really throw you a party just for being cool and hanging out in Dallas?,” he asked (paraphrasing). “It’s like she has her own logo for going to after-parties.” In that case, consider me jealous. I think it’s high time you monetize, Roberts. Roberts is not merely a supporter of the local music and art scene. She is also a talented photographer and writer. A trio of all-star DJs will be playing music upstairs, including Zhora’s Taylor Rea, The Crown and Harp’s Moody Fuqua, and Pour Le Corps records-founder, Marjorie Owens, otherwise known as Clumsy and Shy.
DJ Audrey Lee III will be playing a set at Vietnam Bar and Grill off of Bryan Street this evening, and that should be interesting. Lee is one of the most fearlessly “out there” artists in Dallas, and the setting should surrealistically emphasize that point. Here’s a recent mix, which Lee used a preview for her SXSW appearance.
Saturday
There is a lot of talk about the opening of this brand new book store and coffee shop in Oak Cliff, which is fairly self explanatory. The Wild Detectives is that hybrid of two of life’s greatest joys, and they’re celebrating their newness with a party on Saturday afternoon. The celebration charmingly features live music and paella. I’m not always feeling up to live music, but I’m always down for paella. Luckily the lineup includes Emil Rapstine of the Angelus, who is somehow a perfect fit for a solo performance in this setting. The shop also features beer, wine, and will eventually host some readings as well. The event begins at 3 p.m., with music at 4:30.
Taqueria Pedritos has a hardcore show this evening and the local highlights include the unclassifiable Orgullo Primitivo and the technically proficient, Cerulean Giallo. They’ll be joined by Houston’s Bastard Cult, and Cokskar, out of Minneapolis. Show is at 9 p.m.
