This past Friday, seminal Japanese pop-punkers Shonen Knife swirled into Club Dada to provide some sugary nostalgia. Eyes in the crowd visibly twinkled as original frontwoman Naoko Yamano and her bandmates enthused over Texas barbecue before strumming the introductory chords to “BBQ Party.” The room, mostly filled with older fanboys, was respectful, save one gentleman who got the boot for continually and obnoxiously yelling “Free Pussy Riot” in between each song. Kurt Cobain’s adoring enthusiasm for the group undoubtedly garnered them a sizable American fanbase, yet Friday’s show was rather intimate. Nonetheless, the ladies’ performance was appropriately lively and left men in throwback Shonen Knife tour shirts with jovial grins.
