Oak Cliff State Senator Claude C. Westerfield earned the ire of Dallas women when he objected to Governor James V. Alfred’s February 2,1935 appointment of Dallas lawyer Sarah T. Hughes to the 14th Judicial District Court bench. Westerfield said Hughes “should be home washing dishes.”
