Tagged “the finest expressway in the world” by The Dallas Morning News, North Central was christened with a bottle of French cologne by the wife of Mayor Wallace Savage on August 19, 1949. William C. Smith, in town for the performance of Showboat at the Starlight Operetta, sang “Old Man River,” and square dances were held. Mayor Savage predicted that this marvel of the Motor Age would make people much more relaxed when they got home from work. The grand opening was of little consolation to residents of North Dallas, however, since the two-mile stretch of open road from downtown ended at Fitzhugh. When the photo below was taken in 1951, Park Cities residents had two more years to wait.
