The Week Without Violence-Wasn’t

|

WELL, THEIR INTENTIONS WERE good. The YWCA and the Family Place sponsored “A Week Without Violence” from October 15-21. But alter the statistics for murder, rape, robbery, and aggravated assault were tallied by the Dallas Police Department, violence during the Week Without Violence was up a whopping 30 percent from the week before. When contacted by D Magazine. Shirley McIntyre, a Family Place volunteer who put the program together, expressed surprise; it seems no one had followed up to see whether the effort had worked. But she was philosophical. “It was designed to raise public awareness, to let people know there is help for victims and perpetrators,” McIntyre said. “We didn’t expect for criminals to take a vacation.”
