A University of Texas at Dallas professor received a federal grant for research that may elucidate certain aspects of Huntington’s disease.
“Results from our studies could provide valuable insight into why specific brain cells degenerate in Huntington’s disease,” said Santosk D’Mello, professor of molecular and cell biology, in a statement.
The grant from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stoke will provide $1.67 million throughout a five-year period, according to UT Dallas.
D’Mello has researched the connection between proteins and genes linked to brain development and their effect on neurodegenerative disorders. His research has identified a protein called histone deacetylase-3 (HDAC3), which was found to be toxic to brain cells.
