More Nurses Means Fewer Hospital Readmissions, Study Finds

Improved nursing staffing can translate into lower hospital readmission rates, according to a study in the journal Medical Care.

The study found that each additional patient assigned to a nurse increase the odds of readmission by 9 percent for a heart attack, 6 percent for pneumonia and 7 percent for heart failure. All three conditions are part of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid’s readmission program.
