Glam Glass

The Murano lamp has a history as intriguing as it is beautiful. In the 13th century, the Venetian state moved its entire glassblowing industry to the small island of Murano, primarily to protect the city from fire. There, glassblowers were accorded an elevated status including the right to carry swords, immunity from prosecution should they commit a crime, and the privilege of having their daughters marry into a higher class. Of course, a price – indeed a very high one – was extracted for these privileges: The glassblowers were in effect prisoners, forbidden to leave the island upon punishment of death. Today the renewed interest in Murano glass centers on the glamorous lamps produced from the 1920s through the 1950s, most of which are seen in transparent greens,  turquoises, ambers, milky lavenders, and aqua blues.
