Head to Dough Boy Donuts for the Maple Doughnut

And stick around for many, many, more.

Maybe you’ve already noticed, but there a lot of mediocre doughnut shops in the Dallas area. Like, a whole lot. There’s just so many places using the same pre-mixed ingredients and the typical just-add-water recipe. They practically all taste the same. So, it’s refreshing when a local shop is doing doughnuts the right way. Enter Dough Boy Donuts.

Dough Boy began started as a food truck in 2016, circling the streets of Fort Worth. They made a name for themselves popping up around town, at various markets, outside bars, and even partnering with local breweries to hold beer-donut pairings. The food truck life was not a bad one, but when a local bakery, Leah’s Sweet Treats, decided to close shop, the Dough Boy folks decided to snag the space and transform their operation into a brick and mortar business.

Last week, Dough Boy Donuts opened their doors at 4910 Camp Bowie Blvd., in Fort Worth. The reception has been (not surprisingly) positive. In fact, many days they’re selling out of items.

The reason? Their doughnuts are excellent. The doughnut itself is thicker and larger than most. They’ve got heft, yet still remain airy and soft. When you walk into the shop, you’re immediately greeted by a mesmerizing glass case and their wide assortment of flavors. I’ll rattle off a few options: chocolate chunk, s’mores (complete with large toasted marshmallow), cheesecake, Butterfinger, and the over-the-top “Last Call” with Nutella, maple-peanut butter glaze, Oreo, chocolate chip, pecan, and coconut.

My advice is not to miss the lovely “Cinna Bun” with vanilla frosting and a cinnamon roll drizzle. And their Sriracha-Maple-Bacon is my personal choice for best maple-bacon donut in existence (and they’re pretty much ubiquitous at this point). It’s a crispy bacon strip, flavored with spicy Sriracha and dipped in chocolate, atop a rich, deep maple glaze. It’s just too good. There will also be a variety of seasonal flavors to add in the mix.

Dough Boy is certainly worth a visit if you’re from Fort Worth. But honestly, it’s probably worth a drive from Dallas if you’re hopelessly obsessed with finding the best doughnuts in DFW (*raises hand*).

Check them out Monday from 6 a.m. until noon, Wednesday through Friday from 6 a.m. to noon, Saturday from 6 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. and Sunday from 8 a.m. to noon. (They’re closed on Tuesdays.)
