Tonight, FC Dallas plays the first leg of its CONCACAF Champions League semifinal against Pachuca, the reigning Liga MX titleholder that features the pride of Skyline High School, centerback Omar Gonzalez. Here is a preview. And here is the history they are up against: no MLS squad has won the CONCACAF Champions League, which pits top teams from North America, Central America, and the Caribbean, since the Los Angeles Galaxy did so in 2000, and since the 2008-09 season, only Mexican teams have won it.

With tonight’s match and FCD’s first MLS home game of the season on Saturday against the New England Revolution (with Plano’s own Lee Nguyen), it’s a good time to start following FC Dallas. After being a pretty casual fan for a long time, I jumped all the way in a couple seasons ago, and I can tell you it’s the most rewarding sports experience in North Texas right now. It’s a fun, young team built largely on homegrown talent. If nothing else, it balances out getting kicked in the jeans repeatedly by the Cowboys.
