Skip Fletcher passed away Tuesday after being hospitalized for pneumonia. He was 82. Skip’s father Neil and his uncle Carl created the recipe for the iconic hand-dipped, fried dog on a stick in 1942.

D Magazine profiled Neil and Carl in 1982. It’s an interesting look at how the corny dog was born. In the story, Neil, a half-Cherokee and a Methodist circuit rider, admits, “I’ve been a hustler all my life. I’ve always done well.”

I’d say he did more than well. Both Neil and Carl made the D Magazine list of 100 Greatest Dallasites. And his son’s work certainly made his father proud.
