The Texas summer is upon us. Not to worry! So far the temperature has yet to break 90 degrees, and for Texas natives, that’s nearly sweater weather. Okay, maybe that’s a slight exaggeration, but the point is to partake in some fun outdoor activities before the heat becomes unbearable. Oh, and to keep the little ones occupied now that you can’t use their education as an excuse to find some “me” time.
Instead of the usual family bike route around the neighborhood where you’re constantly yelling “Stop at the CORNER! Look both ways! Watch out for that car!” and trying to make sure everyone’s still alive, bike the Katy Trail instead. Over the years the trail has grown and been beautified with ample greenery, benches, and periodic water fountains. Convenient bridges take you over the streets, so there are no cars to worry about here.
The plus side of biking (or walking) the trail, besides the increase in your children’s general safety, and, you know, exercise, is that you can make the Katy Trail Ice House your destination. By the time you reach it, your kids will have started to grow weary and will need some lunch to fuel the ride home, and you will be in need of a cocktail (margarita, beer, wine, whatever).
Yes, Ice House is more popularly known as a bar, but they actually have spectacular food and a juniors menu. The misted patio is fun and family-friendly during the daytime, and you can bring the pup along, too.
Suit up your kids in their helmets and padding and get out there. It’s going to start getting in the high 90s soon, so don’t wait until then to start boredom busting this summer.
