There’s a national holiday for everything so it should come as no surprise to find out that there is a national holiday for onion rings. That’s right, National Onion Rings Day is celebrated every year on June 22. To make things even more interesting, historians believe cooks from a local drive-in restaurant, Pig Stand–which was established in Oak Cliff–created the onion ring in the 1920s.

Although Pig Stand no longer exists, the onion ring has grown to become an American staple. So whether you like your onion rings fried, beer battered, or dipped in ranch dressing, here is a list of places to get your crunch on during National Onion Rings Day.

Luscher’s Red Hots
Luscher’s is Dallas’ very own little piece of Chicago. Sink your teeth into their famous Uncle Herky Burger, make sure to top it off with Luscher’s peppered bacon to get the full experience. Not feeling a burger? No worries, the Chicago-style restaurant is also home to the best hot dog in Dallas, Luscher’s Post Oak Red Hot. And of course don’t forget to pair your burger or hotdog with some of their mouthwatering onion rings made completely from scratch.

Stackhouse Burger
Stackhouse is all about family and with a loyal following it’s hard not to feel at home when you walk into this Deep Ellum gem. Order a Cuban sandwich or a savory burger with their tasty, thin and crispy onion rings.

Maple & Motor
There’s a reason this joint was featured in Guy Fieri’s Diner’s, Drive-Ins and Dives. Their classic half-pound burger topped with lettuce, tomatoes, mustard, and red onions is served on a toasted bun and can be customized to your liking. Feel free to add a fried egg, jalapeños, chili, or yes, even onion rings; after all it is National Onion Ring Day.

Peggy Sue BBQ
If you’re not feeling the traditional burger and onion ring combination, then head over to Peggy Sue BBQ. The Snider Plaza favorite serves medium to thick onion rings battered in buttermilk. Be adventurous and pair the classic side with something a little less traditional like the smoked chicken or brisket quesadilla.

Hunky’s
Head over to the Bishop Arts District to get your onion ring fix. Hunky’s has been a Dallas staple since 1984. Combine their homemade onion rings with one of their scrumptious specialty burgers such as the Bleu Cheese Cheeseburger, Hula Burger, or Guacamole Cheddar Burger.

Liberty Burger
Liberty Burger prides itself on being environmentally responsible and using only Texan-grown ingredients, they also claim to have the biggest onion rings in Dallas. Visit any of their five Dallas locations and pair their delicious onion rings cooked in their house-made buttermilk batter with their most popular burger and staff favorite, the Nooner. Complete your meal by adding one of their five adult shake options.
