Tom Spicer has been a farmer and forager around here for over 30 years. (He’s also the only other person I know in Dallas who quotes Firesign Theater as well as I do.)  His tiny produce shop with a lovely garden out back is a great source for locally grown, healthy vegetables and produce. He hosts educational dinners from time to time at Spiceman’s FM 1410, and he’s certainly educated his workers and customers to the wonderful world of fine, fresh food.

This morning Spicer received a call from his landlord. “Mike Turner (Turner Realty) called to tell me they had to bust through the concrete on my floor to fix a plumbing problem,” Spicer says. “He said he was going to have to make a big mess in my store so I might as well pack it up.”

Spicer’s shop is located between Urbano Café and a private dining space owned by Urbano Café. Spicer says the plumbing under the whole building has been faulty for some time.

Spicer’s lease at FM 1410 is expired, and he doesn’t hold out much hope that he will be able to tend to his crops much longer. “I’ll fight until the end,” Spice says. “I called an attorney. I guess they’ll win, and I don’t know what I’ll do next. I’ll move where the ocean moves me. I’m a deep swimmer.”

It would be a shame to see that wondrous garden disappear. Imagine how glorious that corner would be if they combined all of the spaces and invested in turning the restaurant/garden space into a lovely market and restaurant combination. Head over this weekend, Spiceman has a bounty of crops to sell.
