Happy 4th of July! If you’ve been in a grocery store at all this month, you’ve seen the piles of berries available cheap. Berry season is great, but I always end up buying more than I can use and I have to throw a lot of them out. I prefer fresh over frozen, but again, how to use them up quickly without sweetness overload? I can only handle so many smoothies. I am hoping to venture into preserving soon, but I haven’t made it there yet.

For this weekend, I made a simple salsa that has a kick. It’s not too sweet — in fact, there’s cayenne and cilantro hiding in there with the blueberries, strawberries, agave and mint.
I cut up some tortillas and lightly brushed them with water (butter works too), then sprinkled sugar and cinnamon on them. A quick toast in the oven at 350 and I had some sweet chips for dipping.

The savory touch makes this really addictive and not too desserty. Next up on my experiment list: boozy popsicles!

(2 cups diced fresh strawberriesDSC00397
-2 cups fresh blueberries
-2 tbsp diced fresh cilantro
-2 tbsp diced fresh mint
-drizzle agave nectar to taste
-cayenne or chili powder to taste.
Mix all and let the flavors marry in the fridge for at least an hour.)
