Thumbs Up to U.S. District Judge Barefoot Sanders for his courageous decision to order no more busing for the Dallas Independent School District. In probably the most difficult decision Sanders will ever have to make, he has saved the Dallas public schools – for the time being. More busing would have created a totally minority school system, which would have run off the small cadre of influential whites who still think DISD is worth saving. Sanders’ decision is a start. It’s now time for responsible leaders – black and white- to rebuild a strong system of public education in Dallas. Sanders’ decision could even bring back some white students who have fled.
