The latest news within the medical community is sure to please some and distress others. In the coming months, an additional hospital may be built for Southwestern Medical School at the University of Texas Health Science Center.
The Zale Foundation is helping to fund a feasibility study for the project. The proposed facility would be a 200- to 250-bed hospital in which teaching physicians from the medical school could treat patients from their private practices. Parkland Hospital would continue to be used as a teaching facility; the new hospital would serve as an extension of the school.
The project -which, no doubt, will cost several million dollars-is not being welcomed by some other Dallas hospitals. Claims are already being made that there is too much competition between existing hospitals.
It’s too early to tell how far the project will go, but indications are that some serious supporters are involved. Word has it that once the feasibility study is completed, Ralph Rogers, chairman of Texas Industries and former chairman of the board of Parkland Hospital, will be one of the leading fundraisers.
