Thumbs Up to Fred Meyer, chairman of the Dallas Republican Host Committee, for agreeing that Republican delegate welcome packets were not an appropriate place to distribute New Testament versions of the Bible. The White House staff had hoped to pull it off, but a loud protest from a national spokesman for the American Jewish Committee apparently squelched the plan. Meyer, who had been unaware of the national controversy, said that the Host Committee was an “ecumenical operation.”
