AT THE END OF 1983, just over 19 percent of the work force in the Dallas/Fort Worth area was employed in manufacturing. Only .3 percent more worked in service-related fields, which ranked first in the various types of employment.
Looking at the nine counties that make up the metropolitan statistical area, 3,877 manufacturing plants were in operation in 1983-an increase of just over 20 from 1982, according to the Bureau of Business Research of the University of Texas at Austin. Of those manufacturing operations, 22 employ more than 1,000 people. At least 10 of the 22 are units (subsidiaries, divisions or operating units) of companies that are somewhere else in the United States (or world). The chart ranks those companies along with others not headquartered here that employ more than 500 people.
A number of major companies not headquartered here have multiple operations that have a combined number of employees over 500. For instance, Schick Inc. has three operations that have 1,500 people on the combined employee lists. A number of companies have multiple manufacturing operations that employ between 500 and 999 peo-people, including Borden Inc., Honeywell Inc. and Owens-Corning Fiberglas Corp.
