Things To Do In Dallas This Weekend: April 19-21

Linda Leonard, a special guest of the Turtle Creek Chorale for their Kander and Ebb concerts. She’ll play Spider Woman from the musical Kiss of the Spider Woman.

I don’t have much to say here, except this terrible week can’t end soon enough. If you can, consider donating blood.

Friday

The Turtle Creek Chorale offers us a medley of showstopping numbers from the repertoire of longtime Broadway collaborators, John Kander and Fred Ebb. They’re responsible for Cabaret and Chicago, among many others, so expect hits from those musicals, such as Chicago‘s “Cell Block Tango” and Cabaret‘s “Maybe This Time.” Cabaret might be one of my favorite musicals (the Dallas Theater Center’s production a couple years ago was wonderful), and listening to Alan Cumming’s “Wilkommen” and Natasha Richardson’s “Cabaret” are actually making me feel the tiniest bit better right now. Richardson was something incredible.  Kander and Ebb are also responsible for “New York, New York,” from Martin Scorsese’s film of the same name. Here’s Frank Sinatra, singing it live. What good is sitting alone in your room, indeed. Come hear the music play.

There’s also Rx at Kitchen Dog Theater, a sprightly comedy about workplace depression. Meena, who feels unfulfilled in her job as a magazine editor for a ridiculously specific livestock publication, agrees to become a test subject for a pill that promises to cure her office blues. Our critic, Lindsey Wilson, says that “it’s this relatable office drone premise, mixed with some truly outstanding performances, that makes the play soar despite its inherently awkward pacing.” She recommends that you go see it, and this evening’s a good time for that, since the performance doubles as a benefit for the Human Rights Initiative of North Texas.

Saturday

It’s Earth Day and Record Store Day. FrontRow’s Christopher Mosley points out that we have several great options for vinyl in North Texas. But if you’re looking for a party, your best bet is Good Records’ day-long celebration. Thirteen acts, including The Relatives, A.Dd+, and Vulgar Fashion, will play the AstroTurf stage starting around 11 a.m., while DJ collective Track Meet keeps things going outside.

Also on Saturday, we have Paste Untapped. Untapped, Spune Production’s music-and-brew fest that began as a block party last year in front of Dallas’ gastropub The Common Table before eventually spilling over to West Dallas, will bring quality beer and tunes to Fort Wort. Performers include Justin Townes Earle, Sarah Jaffe, Deer Tick, and Tennis. Paste Magazine picked up the sponsorship, hence the slight name change, and plans to take our fun little locally-grown festival national. But hungry Record Store Day revelers might find the North Texas Taco Festival more convenient, since you can find treats from El Tizoncito, Velvet Taco, Rusty Taco, Revolver Taco Lounge, La Nueva Fresh & Hot, and Urban Taco, all in one place in Deep Ellum. Coincidentally (or completely on purpose, whichever), the fest lines up with the Deep Ellum Outdoor Market, and there will be live music.

Sunday

Earth Day Dallas activities continue in Fair Park. Bring the kids for crafts, watch a few educational short films, and catch lectures from prominent green advocates and experts. There will be organic and vegan fare, plus beer and wine for adults. Admission is free.
