THUMB AWARD A Circular Argument

|

Thumbs down to Dallas City Council members Al Lipscomb and Diane Ragsdale for signing a circular raising defense funds for the man indicted for slaying Dallas Police Corporal Gary R. Blair last March. Lipscomb and Ragsdale have said they allowed their names to be used in the fundraising drive for Charles Tillis Jr. because they felt he couldn’t get a fair trial without private counsel. Dallas Police Association officials criticized the two councilmembers for undermining public confidence in Dallas County’s judicial system and chided Lipscomb and Ragsdaie for working against the city employees they represent. Perhaps the most telling criticism of the two councilmembers was made by Mayor Starke Taylor. “Al and Diane constantly urge all of us on the council to be sensitive to minority concerns, to walk in the shoes of minority citizens,” Taylor said at a recent council meeting. “In this instance, I think they made a mistake in judgment by not walking in the shoes of our policemen.”
