Every, oh, six months or so for the last upteen years, we receive an urgent confidential message from someone who has heard from a reliable source that the entertainer has just looked at/bought/redecorated a house and is moving here.
UPDATE: Where did this particular Urban Myth originate? Why, from D Magazine, of course! The legendary Alan Pepperd tells the story below:
While you were off living la dolce Art & Antiques in New York, I was on the editorial staff at D Magazine. We we were having one of our long-running arguments about having a substantive illustration on the cover that was somehow related to the main feature story rather than the standard pretty model over the cover line: “Best Enchiladas in Dallas.”
Ruth Fitzgibbons kept repeating the mantra of the necessity of newsstand sales. Unimpressed, Chris Tucker said, “Look, if all we’re after is newsstand sales, then why don’t we just put a picture of Madonna on the cover and say, “Madonna is moving to Dallas.”
From that acerbic remark, the great April’s Fools Madonna is Moving to Dallas cover of the late ‘80s was born. I was sent to the D/FW to pick up the Madonna lookalike  we hired and flew in for the occasion. We photographed her at a Mavericks game and other sites around town.
Chris Tucker wrote the accompanying satiric copy where he quoted a religion expert at the “Sam Perkins School of Theology.” It was a play on SMU’s Joe & Lois Perkins School of Theology. At that time, Sam Perkins was a Dallas Mavericks player. As I recall, Chris was rather disappointed that so few people got the joke.
All of the initial paragragh caps in the story lined up to spell “April Fools.
