FC Dallas Goalie Would Rather Be in Classroom

|

Ray Burse Jr. recorded his first shutout Saturday, when FC Dallas beat Colorado. It’s been a weird season for Burse, who, at 22, kept his summer school schedule at Ohio State while playing a professional sport. But later this month he’ll graduate with a degree in American history. Not too surprising when you know his lineage. His grandfather was a fighter pilot who, as Chuck Yeager’s co-pilot, broke the sound barrier; his grandfather later taught at Tuskegee University and was among the first black men considered for NASA. Burse’s father was a Rhodes Scholar and a four-sport athlete at Oxford.

Against that history you kind of wonder if Burse is slacking. What—only one pro sport to play?

Update: A “sonic booming” FBvian says the Times’ story got one thing wrong about Burse’s grandfather, Emmett Hatch. He didn’t break the sound barrier with Yeager. Yeager flew alone.
