TM relaunched its site yesterday, in case you hadn’t noticed. After spending a little time clicking through it, I offer the following, by way of constructive criticism:
Honestly, we don’t need a podcast of Skip Hollandsworth reading his entire story. It’s a great story. A great read. Not a listen. And I’ve got the same problem with the Tourettetically bobbing head of Evan Smith freestyling its way through the issue’s table of contents. Evan is a wonderful editor and writer. His new blog will be worth following. But, in general, I’d say let the word people perform where they perform best: at the keyboard.
Now then. Steve Brodner’s slideshow was fascinating. Brodner is one of the best illustrators working in America, and TM paid him about $25,000 (by my estimate) to illustrate their 22-page “Best & Worst Legislators” package. It was a real treat to see Brodner’s work. But it was even more fun to hear him talk about the process, how he spent a week in Austin hanging out at the Capitol. More, please.
And, finally, the overall design of the new site is fairly genius. It translates the themes from the magazine’s pages and makes the whole experience easy to navigate. Quite an accomplishment.
