IF THE GLOVE FITS, YOU MUST, UM, EXTINGUISH IT?

|

Perhaps you’ve heard about the sporting goods company that burned down. Nocona Athletic Goods was one of the last places to make baseball gloves by hand, prompting the following from a baseball-loving FBvian:

This morning baseball players of all ilk pulled their Nokona gloves off the shelf, out of their lockers, or perhaps from a dusty attic, buried their faces in the supple leather, and inhaled deeply, most with a moist eye and perhaps a single tear trickling down. Yesterday’s inferno at Nocona Athletic Goods in Nocona has threatened one of the true gems of Texas and a diamond among the few great things that are truly Made in America. Company officials vow to rebuild, which is welcome news to the 80 employees in that small North Texas community.

While Nocona does not do the usual endorsement thing with MLB players, the fabled Nokona glove can be found in many lockers in pro clubhouses, including that of Chicago Cubs infielder Todd Walker. Wouldn’t it be great if every Major League player sent a $1,000 check to the company? At approximately 600 major league players, that $600,000 would go a long way to helping this fabled insitution get back on its feet.
