Review: Aparicio’s Restaurante Mexicano & Tequila Bar

The former Plano Tortilla Factory & Cafe now has a lively scene along with Tex-Mex food.
|

Plano Tortilla Factory & Cafe used to burst at the seams in a hole in the wall in downtown Plano. Then, in 2003, the Aparicio family, which has owned it since 1989, resettled into a spacious, cheerful new building next door with seating for 250, two dining rooms, and a bar.
Now called Aparicio’s, the place hosts a lively scene along with the Tex-Mex food: happy hour, acoustic singers, karaoke on Fridays, and a major-league brunch on weekends with migas and huevos rancheros.

One terrific feature at the new site is its ringside seat to the DART rail. Elongated windows 8 feet tall run the length of the building on the west side, directly abutting DART property. You don’t have to be a kid to get a thrill when a train whooshes by.

The food was still as reliable as it gets, from fajitas to chicken enchiladas, served with good rice and creamy refried beans. Guacamole may have been under-seasoned, but, like everything else, it was unquestionably fresh.

While there’s no disputing the rock-solid combo plates, atypical entrees were appealing, too, including calabaza con pollo, a homey stew with juicy shredded chicken and yellow squash, and unique tacos filled with pork loin and pineapple.
