5 Great Dates

|

Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo | January 16–February 8
Haven’t you heard? This thing is legendary. It says so right on my souvenir koozie. Hit up the rodeo on just about any night of the run for bull riding, steer wrestling, and arguably the greatest assemblage of skin-tight Wranglers you’ve ever seen. How can you turn that down? Adult tickets are $8. Will Rogers Memorial Center, 3401 W. Lancaster Ave. 817-877-2420. fwssr.com.

Sweetheart Swing 2009 | February 14, 7 pm
Ah, Valentine’s Day. Some love it. Some hate it. I say embrace it and all its mushy glory at the Sweetheart Swing. Here’s why: the 16-piece DWS Swing Band accompanied by soulful singer Sara Hickman, plus a delicious spread prepared by the Milestone Culinary Arts Center and frosty Swingtinis. And it’s not called the Sweetheart Swing for nothing. Free swing dance lessons are also on the menu. Tickets are $100 per person. Frontiers of Flight Museum, 6911 Lemmon Ave. 214-565-9463. dws.org.

Gingerbread Classes at the Crescent | December 13 & 20, 11:30 am & 2:30 pm; December 7, 14 & 21, 1 & 4 pm. Adult classes: December 10 & 17, 6 pm
Pastry chef Eric Perelli and staff want to get you into the holiday spirit through that universal avenue—your tummy. While they do have family-friendly classes, we prefer the adult ones. (Hello, eggnog. It’s been a long time.) If you’re worried about the calories, I say bake it, make it, and take it to your sister’s house. Five minutes with your nieces and nephews and your immaculate gingerbread house won’t be so appetizing. The Rosewood Crescent, 400 Crescent Ct. 214-871-3260. crescentcourt.com.

Cooper Institute Luncheon Benefiting Our Kid’s Health | February 27, 12 pm
At the time I had her infamous ’do (ages 4 to 7), Mary Lou Retton had just flip-flopped into Olympic history, claiming her spot as one of America’s sweethearts. Although her impact on hair history is formidable, she now works to promote the benefits of proper nutrition and exercise. Hear her speak at the Cooper Institute’s annual luncheon benefiting Our Kid’s Health, a Cooper-led initiative committed to improving children’s health. Tickets are $150. Hilton Anatole Hotel, Stemmons Ballroom, 2201 Stemmons Fwy. 214-969-0090. cooperinstitute.org.

3LAB Free Facial Event | December 19, 10 am–9 pm
With a long holiday shopping list, plus travel and party plans to organize, it’s easy to go Grinch. But that doesn’t mean you have to look like him. Enter 3LAB, whose aestheticians are offering 30-minute facials right in retail heaven—Barneys. Plus, you’ll get to try some of their new products, like the anti-aging “h” Serum. Free with any 3LAB purchase. Barneys New York, NorthPark Center, 8687 Central Expwy. 469-221-4718. barneys.com.
