Taste Test: Sports Drinks

When it's time to refuel, all of these will do the job, but which tastes best?

You know who the real MVP is? Sports drinks.  They keep us going strong when we are ready to throw in the towel – and do we even thank them? Whether you’re running a marathon or playing a pick-up game, your go-to fuel is there to replenish all those electrolytes you lose when you sweat.

Some athletes are diehard Gatorade fans, others prefer Powerade – and Vitamin Water and Propel fall somewhere in between. But is there really even a difference? For this week’s taste test we compare just that.

Tasting Notes:
Powerade

  • Not a lot of flavor. Pretty boring, but not bad.
  • Light, refreshing, ahhhhh.
  • Familiar sports taste, not strong lemon lime flavor.
  • Tastes very watery and bland.
  • Very sweet. I think this is Powerade… No. Gatorade… No. Powerade.
  • Tastes like when you mix lime Jell-O mix with water and take a swig before putting it into the fridge. Not that I’ve ever done that before…. OK, I’ve totally done that before.

Vitamin Water

  • Tastes like a super bland juice. Very watery. It’s the prettiest color though.
  • This one has to be loaded with sugar. Tastes medicinal.
  • Strong citrus taste, almost like a cardboard orange juice
  • Very overwhelming smell. Almost don’t want to drink it. Never mind, it’s fine, but tastes like it used to be a powder mix.
  • Kinda weird. Like really really flavorful water. I like it.
  • Tastes like watered down orange, peach, mango Tropicana mixed with Splenda and Orbit Tropical Remix gum. I’m confused.

Gatorade

  • Nope.
  • Pretty good, but A was better.
  • I do not like this one, not worth it, not anything.
  • Very lemon-limey. Tastes like Gatorade.
  • Not impressed
  • This is florescent! Tastes like A, except with more sodium mixed in.

Propel

  • Is this Propel? Do they still make Propel? Why it is clear? Either way, ew.
  • Not much lemon flavor, but you can taste the healthy.
  • Surprise taste for it’s coloring, feels light, like it wouldn’t weigh you down.
  • This one tastes exactly like watered down sprite. Not a fan.
  • So sweet. Too sweet. Tastes like sugar water. I don’t hate it, just wouldn’t want to drink during a workout.
  • Tastes like flat Sprite. This is my least favorite.

The Tally:
Powerade – 3 votes
Vitaman Water – 1 votes
Propel – 1 vote
Gatorade – 1 vote

The Winner:
I was shocked Powerade took home the gold, while Gatorade fell behind. If you considered yourself part of the Gatorade fan-base, reach for something different next time – you just might switch teams.
