Besides surfing, there is perhaps no other sport that can boast its own genre of music. The style originated on the beaches of Southern California in the early 1960s and is often as high-energy as the activity itself. Although it fell largely out of the spotlight as rock music became more varied and sophisticated, a number of acts still revive the tradition every year. As Chelsey Plumlee mentioned in her review of the City Surf fitness class, Dallas is “300 miles from the nearest beach,” which is a shame. But don’t let that stop you from enjoying one of the most immediately recognizable styles of music that North America has ever produced.
