Job Opening: Associate Art Director at D Magazine

This year, at the annual City and Regional Magazine Awards, D Magazine won general excellence it is circulation category. You know what you should do? Come work here and help us win it again in 2017. You should email our art director, Kevin Goodbar, and tell him why you’re the right person to be our next associate art director. Send Kevin a cover letter, your résumé, and either PDFs of your work or a link to an online portfolio. His email address is [email protected]. But wait! Don’t send Kevin a note if you are mean or if you suck. If you are the kind of person who likes to gripe and who leaves dirty dishes in the sink, do not send Kevin a note. Here are some details about what the job entails:

+ Reports to art director of D Magazine.

+ Plan art for department pages of D Magazine and occasional feature layouts.

+ Communicate and collaborate with editors through editorial, one-on-one conversations, and email about the art needs for stories.

+ Maintain flexibility in planning art as stories develop.

+ Mock up layouts for story word counts as needed.

+ Contact local companies or people for pick up photography.

+ Assign and art direct photography and illustration to freelance artists. Project management of these assignments. Communicating deadlines and revisions to freelancers to receive art in timely manner.

+ Keep track of freelance invoices and forwarding for necessary approval.

+ Contact photo subjects for portrait permission or venue managers for permission to photograph.

+ Produce occasional photo shoots.

+ Styling experience a plus.

+ Pitching story ideas a plus.

+ Attend and art direct some photo shoots. Local travel to some shoots required.

+ Occasional assistance and design for associate creative director of D Home and D Weddings.

+ Occasional image research and calling in pick up art for feature stories.
