On Friday, Donald John Trump will become the 45th president of the United States of America.
Trump’s ascendance to the nation’s highest office will be welcomed in Washington D.C. with performances by Toby Keith and 3 Doors Down, and, in some quarters, a measure of excitement and hope. Elsewhere, the inauguration of the historically unpopular president-elect will be greeted by protests, boycotts, and spectacularly catty film screenings.
To mark the occasion in its own way, Dallas VideoFest is sponsoring a free screening of C.S.A.: The Confederate States of America at 5 p.m. Friday at the Texas Theatre. The movie, a Ken Burns-esque documentary-style imagining of an alternate history in which the South won the Civil War, is a portrait of a country whose darkest impulses — a cavalcade of awful isms, starting with racism and authoritarianism — have permeated every level of society, and been ensconced at the highest levels of government. The film, keep in mind, is fictional.
If you can’t make it to the show Friday, the entire film is up on YouTube:
