When I Went: June 2008

Was That the Best Time of Year to Go? It was amazing; the weather was perfect. We couldn’t have asked for anything better.

Why I Went There: I had just learned that my corporate real estate position I had held for 8+ years was not available to me anymore, though I was given the option to continue my career in the retail stores.  Having spent most of my 20s with one of The Best Companies To Work For in America, I was a bit devastated and felt like I needed a break before I tried to figure out what my next move was.

Who Went With Me? My sweet hubby (boyfriend at the time)

We Stayed Here: The Occidental Grand Hotel in Cozumel

You Won’t Want to Miss: Honestly, this was not an overly robust trip. It was all-inclusive, a quick and easy trip to plan with little effort and lots of impulse.

Eat Here: I was too chicken to leave the grounds of the resort (my first time in Mexico), so we ate buffet food.  (Lame, I know).  Being in Mexico, I didn’t really encounter anything too terribly authentic ( i.e. they served burgers and hotdogs).  Though, there was plenty of tequila and Corona.

Play Here: The concierge was able to set up almost any touristy thing we wanted to do.  We found that parasailing was the most fun activity, though.

If I Went Again: We probably would not have gone to the timeshare presentation, as recommended by the concierge, though of course it wasn’t presented that way.  Maybe we were naive and stupid, but after we sat through four hours of prime beach time, we politely declined their incredibly generous offer to become a member of their travel club.  Consequently, we were berated for being stupid Americans.  No worries, we took our free parasailing tickets and left. Weird sales technique, if you ask me.  Next time, we’ll spend the money and stay at the Four Seasons.

How Did You Get There From Dallas? Hopped a flight to Houston, then straight to Cozumel.

Other Tips For Fellow Travelers: Once we got back to Texas, we did some more research on Occidental Hotels.  Yeah, timeshares are their M.O. That was a bit disappointing, but we came home with pretty good tans, so we had that going for us.
