The Look Good, Feel Good Connection

How Plastic Surgery Plays a Role in Women’s Wellness

“When I look good, I feel better.” Women have been saying this for years. There is unarguably a connection between how a woman feels and her appearance. One of that fastest, most effective ways to get a desired appearance is with plastic surgery.

“Everyone feels better when they look their best,” says Dr. Steven J. White, a board-certified plastic surgeon with USA Plastic Surgery. “Naturally, self-esteem soars when you feel confident in your appearance. The greatest reward for me as a plastic surgeon is not only seeing the physical transformations after surgery, but also seeing the huge impact in how patients see themselves postoperatively. If you can take what they perceive to be a negative and instead turn it into a strong positive, it’s amazing to see the change in how patients feel about themselves. I believe this is truly the essence and magic of cosmetic plastic surgery.”

Dr. White says the following cosmetic plastic surgery procedures are what often yield the greatest satisfaction among his patients. From reshaping a nose to body recontouring to achieving a more youthful appearance with a facelift, a new you is well within reach.

Mommy Makeovers. Rapid Recovery Mommy Makeover is the latest advance in breast and body contouring offered by Dr. White. Amazing results can be seen when a tummy tuck is combined with either breast enhancement (breast augmentation or breast lift) or liposuction of the hips, thighs, and knees. Dr. White calls this the Tummy and Above or Tummy and Below. “Many patients opt for all three, as moms are eager to get back into bikini shape after they finish having children,” he says. The Rapid Recovery Mommy Makeover yields remarkable results, less pain, and faster recovery. Most patients find it hard to believe they can have a tummy tuck and breast augmentation or breast lift with little (if any) bruising, be off pain pills in 24 hours, and be back to work in seven to 10 days.”

Tummy Tuck. Traditional tummy tuck techniques may result in an un-natural, operated look, particularly in the upper abdomen and around the umbilicus or belly button.  Dr. White developed the TummySculpt™ Tummy Tuck to obtain a more defined abdomen and a more natural umbilicus. For most patients, the scar is well hidden beneath the bikini line. A tummy tuck can produce a dramatic improvement in the abdomen by removing both the excess fat and skin and by tightening the abdominal muscles stretched by one or more pregnancies. Since a tummy tuck typically involves tightening the loose abdominal muscles with permanent sutures, it is best to wait until the patient has decided she no longer plans to have children. Weight should be stable; ideal body weight isn’t necessary. Although Dr. White’s patients often drop several dress sizes because he gets the tummy so tight, a tummy tuck is not meant to be a weight loss procedure.  A patient’s pain and recovery time depend on two things-how the procedure is performed and how the patient is cared for after surgery. Precise techniques result in minimal blood loss which allows for little if any bruising and a quick recovery. Patients typically only need Tylenol for discomfort after surgery and they are usually back at work in just seven to 10 days.

Liposuction. Liposuction slims and reshapes specific areas of the body by removing excess fat deposits, improving your body contours and proportion, and ultimately enhancing your self-image. Body sculpting with liposuction has continued to grow in popularity, making it the most common cosmetic surgical procedure for both men and women. Dr. White performs Circumferential Micro— Liposculpture for greater fat removal and therefore better body sculpting while using very small diameter cannulas (hollow instruments for fat suction) for smoother contours. Specially designed, custom-made cannulas allow a more natural look with less chance of unevenness. A tumescent (super wet) technique is also used to minimize blood loss and allow larger volumes of fat to be removed more safely. Recovery is faster and most patients can return to work after several days. Success in liposuction is mainly determined by the amount of fat removed, the smoothness of the skin overlying the area after liposuction, and the improvement in overall body shape and contour. Recovery is usually quick, and results are maintained with proper diet and exercise.

Facial Rejuvenation. Facelift patients usually begin to explore surgery for signs of facial aging when the injectables (Botox and fillers) become less effective over time as the skin becomes looser, the face begins to droop, and the neckline becomes less defined. Although patients are often focused on the jowls and neck, most patients will first benefit from rejuvenation of the upper face with a brow lift and upper and lower eyelid lift (blepharoplasty). According to Dr. White, the goal in facelift surgery should be a natural refreshed appearance with a defined neck and jawline with imperceptible scars without distortion of the earlobes or hairline. This is why he developed his Dual Layer Bi-Directional High SMAS Face and Neck Lift. By lifting the drooping face up, sculpting the neck, and re-draping and removing the excess loose skin without tension, natural results can be achieved. Surprisingly, it does not hurt, and narcotics are not needed. Typically, there is little (if any) bruising and patients often resume some social activities one week later.
