THUMBS DOWN UNWELCOME INTERFERENCE

To the Dallas Landmark Commission, for meddling in Catholic Diocese of Dallas affairs by threatening to designate the old St. Ann’s school on Harry Nines Boulevard a historical landmark.The diocese, looking for $11.3 million to finally settle all claims in the aftermath of the Rudy Kos child-abuse scandal, can raise $4 million of that sum by selling the architecturally insignificant structure to a developer. Landmark status would kill that deal. St. Ann’s may hold nostalgic meaning for the Hispanic community the building once served, but the bishop, not government bureaucrats, should allocate diocesan resources. Or what’s the point of the Constitution?
