DALLAS AND FORT WORTH MEDIA

D Magazine, which is published monthly, can be found on area newsstands.

The Star-Telegram publishes separate editions for Arlington and Northeast Tarrant County that are available on newsstands in those areas.

The Arlington Morning News publishes Wednesday through Sunday and is available bundled with The Dallas Morning News, or separately, at Arlington newsstands.

Alternative weeklies: The Met, the Dallas Observer. and FW Weekly can be found free at restaurants, clubs, hotels, and retail establishments throughout the area.

TRANSPORTATION

Dallas is best seen by car, but you can get by without one if you are staying downtown or at one of the large hotels. Taxis and private shuttles are available to and from D/FW International Airport and Love Field. Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) buses also run between downtown and Love Field.

For the most part, other DART routes go to and from downtown and around downtown: fare is $1 for local service, $2 for premium service: call 214-979-1111 for information.

Bus service in Fort Worth is operated by The T. Buses around downtown are free, and the fare on other routes around the city is 80 cents. Call 817-871-6200 for schedules and information.

If you are driving, construction on U.S. Highway 75 (North Central Expressway) is ongoing, seemingly forever, south of Royal Lane. For lane closing and construction information on area roads, call 214-374-4100.

PHONE SERVICE

Dallas and fort Worth are served by two area codes, 214 and 817. Many area businesses have “metro” numbers that can be accessed by either area code without a long distance charge. However, you still have to dial the area code (but not 1) when calling a metro number. We can’t wait for our third area code, 972, which the state Public Utilities Commission is currently deciding exactly how to impose on us

LOCAL CUSTOMS

You may be able to hail a cab by standing on the side of the street and raising your arm, but don’t expect it. Cut to the chase by just calling a cab company (below). Also, the local liquor laws confuse even residents. A primer: In wet areas. Deer and wine can be found at supermarkets and also at liquor stores; liquor is oniy sold at liquor stores. Many restaurants in dry areas offer a Unicard, a nifty work-around that allows them to sell liquor by the drink. When in doubt, just ask.

Concierge Tip of the Month

William Boyd, an assistant concierge at The Adolphus Hotel, says the recent trend of cigar smoking runs counter to today’s broader “No Smoking” policies. To avoid unfriendly glares, Boyd recommends smoking cigars in establishments that welcome them. In Dallas, try Morton’s of Chicago, Routh Street Brewery, Velvet E., and 8.0’s Tar Bar. In Fort Worth or Addison, try the Flying Saucer Beer Emporium.

His further advice: “Travel safely and don’t let that hot ash fall in your lap.”
