Dear Members:

We are very pleased to welcome back to our area this month best-selling author and storyteller Garrison Keillor. Garrison and his American Radio Company will perform a special non-broadcast performance of his popular radio variety show Sunday, March 21, at 7 p.m. at the Will Rogers Auditorium in Fort Worth. The show features Radio Company regulars Ivy Austin. Broadway Local Theatre Company, the Coffee Cup Orchestra and other special musical guests, and proceeds from the show will benefit KERA 90.1. Garrison’s weekly public radio series is one of the most popular programs on our station, and Garrison, himself, professes to be a big fan of KERA 90.1, so I invite you to join us for what promises to be a very special evening of family entertainment. (For more information about tickets, turn to page 116 in this issue of Dial.)

March also signals KERA Channel 13s first pledge drive of the new year, and we have several exciting specials airing during this important time. It’s interesting to note that one of the music concerts we’re airing this month on Channel 13 – The Bob Dylan 30th Anniversary Celebration – originally was offered on cable stations as a pay-per-view selection last October (see page 107). This Madison Square Garden tribute features a galaxy of rock and roll superstars and their show-stopping performances, but a large percentage of households in our viewing area who cannot afford or choose not to subscribe to cable were unable to view this historic musical event when it premiered on cable last fall. Now, Channel 13 makes this concert (and many more) available to North Texans without charge. We are reminded that the programs on KERA Channel 13 and KDTN Channel 2 may be the only way many families will be able to enjoy a play, concert, opera or dance performance this year. And as members of these stations, you make it possible with your support Thanks to your continued generosity, we can put exceptional programs within everyone’s reach every day of the year.

But your membership dollars provide so much more than just programming. Your contributions support KERA and KDTN’s role in the education and development of children in our communities through our Sesame Street Preschool Educational Program (PEP) initiative as well as our exceptional children’s programming, As members, you help us make lifelong learning opportunities at home and at school available to everyone regardless of their age and income through instructional television (ITV) and other educational services. And through your support, we provide programs with closed captions and descriptive video tor the people in our communities who need and use these special services.

The success of KERA Channel 13, KDTN Channel 2 and KERA 90.1 as public broadcasting stations depends on the support of individuals corporations, foundations and other community institutions. Our md;vidua! members provide the majority of our operating funds, and many corporations and foundations, which are vitally important, seek to determine that the individual support is there before making their commitment.

As you can see, members make the difference to us and in everything we do. Thank you for your continued support of KERA Channel 13, KDTN Channel 2 and KERA 90.1

Best wishes,

Richard J. Meyer

President and CEO
