This KERA special explores the human side of the current political and military struggles in Central America by following Fort Worth’s Gary Bennett as he attempts to help the people caught in the conflict between Nicaraguan government troops and contra rebels. Bennett, a former Navy man who first visited the troubled region four years ago, concentrates his efforts along the refugee-packed Miskito Coast in Honduras.

KERA’s new season of this award-winning public affairs program kicks off with a look at the drug dilemma in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. Host Bob Ray Sanders (pictured) begins the report with a profile of cocaine and heroine addicts and a look at how drugs are destroying people’s lives. Mia Squilla follows up with a review of drug treatment centers.

Later in the month, News Addition examines the state of the prison system in Texas by focusing on the plight of one man and how life in prison has drastically changed him. Also this month, News Addition takes a look at how a new advocacy group is fighting the public health system at Parkland Hospital and working on getting better treatment for all patients.

Moyers: Facing Evil

In this ninety-minute special coproduced by KERA and hosted by journalist Bill Moyers, eloquent men and women discuss the dramatic confrontations they have had with the force of evil – and share the discovery that exploring evil leads to revelations about goodness. Speakers featured in this KERA production include former Texas Congresswoman Barbara Jordan, poet Maya Angelou, Holocaust scholar Raul Hilberg, dancer, choreographer, and author Chung-Liang Al Huang, philosopher Philip Paul Hallie, and educator/minister Dr. Samuel D. Proctor.
