A Cook’s Tour

“This book before you is intended for anyone away from home who is hungry or is about to be hungry,” say the editors of Where to Eat in America. Anyone, that is, who travels and still hopes for something better than tough steak, soggy potatoes and iceberg lettuce salad at the nearest diner. The editors of WTEIA have consulted local dining experts in the 30 most visited American cities, asking them for recommendations in various categories (our own David Bauer contributed the Dallas listings). Among the categories: best hotel meal, best restaurant with music, best place for a late-night snack, best businessman’s lunch and all-around best restaurant in the city. A handy traveling companion. Published by Random House, $5.95. At most area bookstores.

Face Value

The models in Vogue always look fabulous – why can’t you? Aside from certain genetic shortcomings (we’re not all blessed with a face like Lauren Hutton’s), it could be the way you apply your make-up. Perhaps all you need is a little professional advice. Susan Posnick has worked as a make-up stylist for several years. Usually her clients are models, but when she’s not on assignment, Susan schedules private consultations. For $30, she will spend 90 minutes showing you how to apply makeup properly, recommending colors and brands compatible with your skin type and lifestyle. Before you leave, she will give you a list of the brands she has recommended, as well as stores where they can be purchased. She will also draw a diagram of your face, indicating where each type of make-up should be applied, so that you can continue to practice what you learned after you’ve forgotten the details of the consultation. For an appointment, call her at 826-9459.

The Belle Tiles For You

Dorothy Davis designs beautiful tiles – tiles for the kitchen, the fireplace, the bathroom, even the swimming pool. Her credentials are impressive: four years of apprenticeship with a small but prolific tile company in Grimaud, France and satisfied clients like Brigitte Bardot, whose kitchen walls bear Davis originals. Dorothy, who now works for Terra Firma Tile Company, 2906 N. Fitzhugh, is one of only a handful of artisans in the Southwest with such a specialty. She bakes, glazes, and paints each tile using the Majorca faience technique. She will create original designs or reproduce existing ones (one European client asked that a favorite Oriental rug, complete with tassel fringe, be reproduced on the tile floor of his swim-JOE SNYDER ming pool). To see samples of her work or to in-quire about scheduling your own project, visit the Terra Firma Tile Company between 8 and 5, Mon-day through Friday.

Catch 22

By the time a couple has paid for two tickets to the movies, two boxes of popcorn, and two soft drinks, their evening has cost about $9. Movie thrills aren’t cheap anymore. But they can be, if you’re a Film Festival Associate. In addition to receiving first choice on seats at the Festival itself (this year’s guest director will be George Cukor), Associates are invited to view 22 movies during the year at a cost of about 80¢ per movie per person. (Sorry, no popcorn.) Once each month, except in December, the Festival staff previews a first-run film and reviews an old classic for its members. Members are notified by monthly newsletter about what new films are to be shown. Last year’s schedule included previews of new films like Equus with Richard Burton and I Never Promised You a Rose Garden with Bibi Andersson, as well as old films like Of Human Bondage with Bette Davis and My Man Godfrey starring William Powell and Carole Lombard. Membership ($20 per person or $35 per couple per year) is limited to 400 persons, the capacity of SMU’s Bob Hope Theater. For more information, call the Festival office at 692-2979.
