A Gala Day for Tennis

|

Ethel Kennedy will be there. And so will Roberta Peters. That’s just the beginning of a line-up of celebrities and tennis professionals who will be in town for the 2nd Annual Awards Banquet and Celebrity Pro-Am hosted by the Association of Tennis Professionals to benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

There will be one full day and two nights of tennis and parties all for a worthy cause. The festivities begin with a barbecue at the Jim Coker’s farm on Sunday night, September 12. On the morning of the 13th, there will be a champagne brunch for the players, celebrities and pros at Bent Tree Country Club.

Then the tennis begins. The tournament will be at Bent Tree and tennis professionals and celebrities will team up with local buffs who are paying $1,000 apiece for the privilege of participating in these doubles matches. Even the professionals pay their own way to the event. It’s all for charity. Ethel Kennedy will be playing as well as presiding over some of the events as Honorary Chairman of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

The Awards Banquet follows the tennis that evening. Tickets are $50. Guests will receive their invitations on a custom designed Adidas racket cover, and during the cocktail hour, everyone will have the privilege of bidding on more tennis equipment. The silent auction will also feature such items as tennis trips and momentos from the players. The racket Bjorn Borg used in the Davis Cup finals is bound to be a popular item.

After the sipping and bidding, the guests move on to the Fairmont’s International Room for dinner and the awards. The purpose of the banquet is to allow the Association of Tennis Professionals to honor their own. John Newcombe, new president of ATP, will preside over the salute to the Player of the Year. Other awards will also be presented – among them, Tennis Writer of the Year, Newcomer of the Year, and Doubles Team of the Year. There will also be entertainment and a celebrity emcee.

For ticket information for the banquet, call 747-9948 or 637-6545. Tournament tickets can be bought at the Cystic Fibrosis Chapter office, the ATP office in the World Trade Center, Cullum & Boren stores, the Valley View Bank, and all area tennis pro shops. But hurry, there are only a limited number available.

It promises to be a great day for ten nis and the ATP’s favorite charity. See you there!
