Thank heavens for sweaters because this is the time of year when I very much adopt a “just say yes” philosophy to anything edible. I can justify going back for thirds, giving my running shoes the silent treatment, and engaging in a weekly tug-of-war with my jeans. In honor of that sentiment, I welcome you to our “Food Issue,” wherein we celebrate all manner of people, places, and things associated with food. Creative director Todd Johnson hit some of the hottest epicurean shops in town to find the best in perishable presents. In the mood to make an edible masterpiece of your own? Not only do we have the deets on a chocolate-making class led by chocolatier Dorian Isenberg, we also invited ourselves into the kitchens of four of the city’s top chefs. Even better, we refused to leave until they provided us one of their most prized holiday recipes. We do it all for you, dear readers.
But the real star of the show is our “Restaurant Awards.” During the last few months, we’ve managed to take just enough of a break from chowing down to notice all the lovely and amazing things that surround us in our favorite restaurants. We’ve nominated winners, debated, and come up with a definitive list that includes our favorite glasses, dishes, patio furniture, chairs, waitstaff, and so much more.
And as I collect pounds, I encourage you to take a look at a more beautiful kind of collecting. Lisa Martensen and Don Skipper’s gorgeous home is filled with unbelievable treasures that Martensen has amassed almost solely by hunting estate sales. It’s a real treat, and it might even inspire you to start a collection of your own.
